Wii Sports Resort Review

Wii Sports Resort Review

The Wii Sports Resort was released in late summer 2009, and already it is on track to be one of the hottest and must-have Wii games for Christmas 2009. The game is actually a sequel to the popular Wii Sports, but what makes the Wii Sports Resort great is that there are so many more games to enjoy in the package.

Wii Sports Resort Overview

The key to this Nintendo release is the realism you will feel when playing it. One addition to add to the enjoyment of the game is the Wii Motion Plus accessory, a small add-on that fits into the Wii Remote. Plug it in and your Wii remote takes on much more precision and responsiveness. You will definitely notice the difference, depending on the type of game you are playing at any one time.

The sensor plugs into the base of the Wii Remote controller. It, combined with the accelerometer and sensor bar, gives the player a greater sense of immersion into the game itself. Everything becomes much more precise and as a result, more fun. Even the slightest movements of your wrist will affect the controller – and the outcome of the game.

Games Included

The Wii Sports Resort adds many more possible games to play than the original Wii Sports, and to be honest, there are some pretty cool games to be enjoyed with this thing!

There are twelve different “sports” that you can play in the Wii Sports resort. Ten of them are new and the ones that are the same as the original – golf and bowling – are updates, and are more challenging to play than the original game as well.  The rundown of games included are the following: Wake boarding, archery, frisbee, bowling, jet skiing, cycling, basketball, canoeing, parachuting, sword fighting, ping pong and golf. To enjoy the game with other players, they will have to purchase additional remotes that contain the Wii Motion Plus. Otherwise, you can just pass the remote from player to player. It would be very cool if there were a way to play the multi-player games online. (just a suggestions Nintendo!)

Because of the Wii Motion Plus sensitivity, you will definitely notice a difference in the play of these games. For example, in bowling, adding spin to the ball is much easier. Adding extra spin allows the player to play just like the pros and project the ball in to the pins at just the right angle to bowl strike after strike. Sure it will take some practice, but the extra skill required is worth the effort. Cycling is one game that does not feel like the real thing since you are using your arms to pedal. The Wii Motion Plus can also be used with other games such as Zelda and Red Steel 2.

Game Highlights

Sword Fighting – If you enjoyed the move “The Gladiator”, than you will love this game. Here is where the addition of the Wii Remote Plus accessory really shines. The precision needed to fight successfully is amazing. To beat opponents and win actually takes some strategy. Sword fighting can get pretty intense as you block your opponents and strike when they are vulnerable.

Wakeboarding – Another favorite of the Sports Resort and where the controls respond well to the players’ moves. You get points by how successfully you maneuver around obstacles and make jumps. As you unlock more of the game, the difficulty becomes much more pronounced.

Frisbee – Looks pretty simple, but this game can be very challenging. You’ll open this game with a dog whereby you must hit a bullseye and whereever the dog catches it is where the frisbee lands. As the game unlocks higher levels, a frisbee golf course is your next challenge. Plan on a higher than normal learning curve for this one.

Archery – You will be hitting targets from various distances, with variables like wind to contend with as well. Somewhat slow paced but not easy either. You will need focus and a steady hand here. Hitting the bulls eye is not easy, but when you do hit the target, its a great feeling.

Basketball – Typical basketball game: dunk the ball as many times as you can before the time runs out. Getting to a certain level unlocks a 3 on 3 pick up game, which is actually quite fun. You can block shots, steal the ball, etc. just as in a real game. Also includes a 3-point shootout.

Ping Pong – This one plays just like the original tennis game on Wii Sports, but instead of a court, you have a table. Ping pong is fun, and you can even spin the ball just like a real pro would do.

Golf – Updated in this version with a new course and much improved controls (thanks to the Wii Motion Plus). Hit cut shots and fades just like the pros, depending on how you swing the club. This won’t replace the real game of golf, but for those winter months, its a good alternative!

Bowling – The Wii Motion Plus makes bowling more precise and more fun too. Still alot of fun, especially with a group of friends to bowl with.

Power Cruising – The object is to ride the water through a series of rings to reach the finish line. The water effects are pretty cool on this one, but the game itself is a little boring. Might be good for the boater during winter months as well!

Canoeing – This would seem like a simple game but its not. Your success depends on how well you can get through an obstacle course, and stay in sync with your passenger in 2 person mode. Easier said than done!

Cycling – If you like peddling with your arms, you’ll love this. Otherwise it does leave something to be desired. Like canoeing, the way you lean determines how your bike will turn. It can be very realistic though because Nintendo added things like tailwinds, fatigue, sprints, etc. – just like a Tour De France bike race. If you can get over not peddling with your legs, this one can be really fun and challenging.

Sky Diving – The object of the game is to hook up with other sky divers and take a picture.  To do so means that you have to hook up with four other divers, then get them to face the camera.  The grand finale is attempting to hook up with everyone in the sky!  This is a fun one, but maybe not as challenging as other games like canoeing or sword fighting.

Game Graphics

Graphics seem to be better overall on this game as opposed to the original Wii Sports. The game features lots of color and the water effects are especially cool in games like wake boarding and jet skiing.

Price

The game that includes the Wii motion Plus can be had for less than $50 on Amazon.com. If you simply need to purchase the game without the accessory, plan on spending around $20. As always there is Ebay too, but don’t plan on too big of a discount anywhere until after Christmas 2009.

Rating

We give this game a solid 4 1/2 stars out of five. Because there are so many games included, you can’t really get bored with it for quite some time. And with the extra precision afforded by the Wii Motion Plus, you’ll have a challenging time just about any time you pick up the remote and dive in.
